Oh, Hi! Ohio! The Capital City Wine Trail in Ohio, USA

Ohio boasts of a number of attractions. The most prominent are its Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the historic Ohio and Seneca caverns, Amish country, its historic parks and homes of US presidents and famous inventors like Edison. Then there are its safaris, museums, Indian burial grounds, castles, tree houses, and the “world’s largest” things such as baskets, pumpkins, and washboards. That’s not all, though.

Ohio is also well-known for its charming wine trails. The state has over six wine trails, and today, we will explore the Capital City Wine Trail, which has something for every wine lover.

Some wineries offer the entire winemaking experience besides their tours and tastings. At every winery you visit, you will be welcomed by friendly folk who are excited about their vineyards and eager to introduce you to their specialty wines. Don’t be surprised to find some winemakers inviting you over to their place to enjoy their wines with local cheese. So bring out your VinGardeValise® and get ready to bring some fantastic wines home. How about some wine bottles customized with your own label, name and photo? Wouldn’t that be lovely?

Let’s now head to the heart of Ohio and visit those wineries!

Eldchrist Winery

Eldchrist Winery is located just minutes from Dublin in Plain City, Ohio. Christopher Eldredge established the winery with his wife in 2006, in a renovated farmhouse originally built in 1863, naming it Eldchrist, to rhyme with “Held, Kissed.” The wines are crafted in the wine barn, including grape-crushing, pressing, and bottling. The winery’s signature wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with flavors of spicy plum, and sweet vanilla with a sour cherry finish. They also make American Chardonnay, with a house red and house white. Today, with six grape varieties, Eldchrist produces eighteen different wines featuring higher acidity, more fruit flavors, and lower tannins, with the selection ranging from sweet whites, a rosé, and dry reds.  Besides Ohio grapes, the winery makes premium reserve wines from California grapes.

According to their website,
“Eldchrist Winery is committed to providing a full winery experience for the people of Union and Madison Counties in Ohio.  Our first acre of grape vines includes 6 strategically selected grape varieties.”
Enjoy a walking tour around the vineyard. Taste their wines and buy the ones you like from the six varieties of grapes.

Hidden Lakes Winery

Hidden Lakes Winery was established in 2009 by the Pfeifer family.  It is located about twelve miles from downtown Columbus, off State Route 33 and Gender Road in the heart of Canal Winchester, Ohio, on a six acre lakefront property. While the winery is managed by Damon A Pfeifer, a fifth-generation winemaker, who inherited the art of winemaking from his ancestors, the Mid-Ohio Historical Doll and Toy Museum, located next door, is owned and managed by his mother, Henrietta. Wine is made from hand-picked, freshly pressed grape juice from vineyards in Ohio and California. The wines are fermented in stainless steel drums in the winery, and aged on the Winchester Pike property.
